Healthy Hummus – the winning combination we’ve all been waiting for!!!

if you’re like me and Lo – you LOVE hummus!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I make it all the time. So I thought it was about time I shared a secret /w you….you can use plain yogurt INSTEAD of tahini and therefore – have less calories per bite :D who wants to be worrying about calories while devouring every last drop of hummus? – not me :)

I stumbled upon this recipe when I was counting calories and have never gone back. The girl didn’t know where she got the recipe from so I’m not citing her either :P lol

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 cloves of garlic (chopped/minced)
  • 1/4-1/2 cup 1% PLAIN yogurt
  • 1 can of chickpeas (washed & drained)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • BLENDER

TIP: when rinsing and draining the chick peas I find it best to use a can opener and ONLY open half the can then use your finger to keep the peas from falling out and fill-refill and rinse the chickpeas in the can :)

Logan add in – He loves letters! and this FACT can be proven here, here and here (for your enjoyment)

Anyway back to the yummy hummy :) – yep loser ALERT!

You basically just toss all the ingredients into a blender and puree it – note: you do not have to point at your blender while making and smile like you’re going crazy. That part is optional :)

*If your hummus is too chunky simply add more yogurt and blend again! it’s that easy :D

Your end product should look something like this….I know AWESOME and low in fat and calories. (~ 120 cal per half cup)

Trust Logan and try it – it’s amazing!!! even better if you eat part of your hand /w it ;) ….or so I’ve been told.

So there is yet another healthy and veggie-friendly recipe that is in our snack rotation. Let me know if you try it and it will be added to my recipe page :D

  1. I LOVE hummus and will be trying out this recipe. I also wanted to let you know I made the spaghetti bake and gave some to my parents (I always cook a bunch and give them some of whatever I cook) and my mom LOVED it! She said that is now one of her favorite recipes (for me to cook). Just thought I would let you know. Thanks for the recipes!

  2. Omg, hummus is my favorite food!!!!! I always get it store bought (too lazy to make it) but this recipe looks super easy and really good! I am DEFINITELY going to try it sometime! :)

  3. I am going to bookmark this to try. I have almost all of the ingredients and have been meaning to try and make some. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  4. Lo is the cutest hummus hand eater I've ever seen!!!! Oooo… so cute! I tried hummus for the first time this summer and really enjoyed it, I didn't realize it was high in calories, but shoot… I'd much rather do the yogurt. It looks super good! I'm definitely going to try the "yummy hummy!" Haha! Love it!
Almost as much as I love obsessively stalking you and the fam. :)

  5. Ooh that little Lo, I want to squeeze his yummy hummy eating little cheeks! Love the pics!

And, I'm totally good with you pointing at the blender. In fact, I think it IS a necessary step in the recipe. It's better than when I make things and take pics of them, I like the pic of me pretending to bite it, or actually just eating it, even though they typically don't come out very appealing…Oh well. :)

I've never tried making hummus, but really enjoy it, so I think this is a "must try" for me! Thanks!

  8. @Patty T – That is AWESOME that your mom loved the baked spaghetti :D so happy!!!! glad you like the recipes I create/find/try out :)

@Garden Girl☺ – YAY!!! I think it actually works out to be cheaper than store bought hummus b/c it makes more BUT – b/c it uses yogurt instead of tahini is wont be as thick. but it still tastes absolutely amazing

@Christy @ My Dirt Road Anthem: A Runner's Blog – let me know how it goes :D

@Jessica @ rerunrunning – I love when you stalk me and Colin and I are discussing the prospect of making you and Jay his God parents :P LOL ;)

@Cecily @ http://www.rerunrunning.com – It's refreshing to know that other people take ridiculous pics of themselves /w food. ALSO I am a big fan of mirror shots even though you knocked them in your last post :P lol you rocked the self pics!!!

  9. I've used peanut butter as a substitute for tahini as well. It's not as low fat as the yogurt option, but it sure is delicious!!
