Family, Funnel Cakes & Fitness

ok so I never got to tell you guys about my amazing Family Day!

We ended up going to my moms for Funnel Cakes! Yes, I know – exciting isn’t it 😀

My mom makes her own batter and then we drizzle, deep fry, flip and top with a plethora of amazing sweet and savory treats. So delicious.

I went sweet with a side of bacon. I think we all did except for Dan, he wanted garlic, butter, bacon and such. I think it was good because it sure smelt fantastic.

Here is the recipe if anyone is a) interested in extremely unhealthy food and/or b) owns a deep fryer or has a lot of oil to spare 😉

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • 3 Tbsp sour cream
  • not quite 2 cups of milk
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups flour

Directions:

  1. Measure sour cream into a measuring cup.
  2. Fill to the 2 cup mark with milk.
  3. Stir milk mixture into beaten eggs.
  4. Sift dry ingredients into egg/milk mixture and beat until smooth.
  5. If the batter isn’t runny, add more milk.
  6. Heat the oil to 375F
  7. Drizzle from funnel or pitcher – start from the center, joining the stream of batter to avoid clumps breaking off.
  8. Flip when the bottom turns golden brown and cook till other side is done.
  9. Drain and top with whatever you desire!

[adapted from Food that Really Schmecks] it’s a really cool Mennonite cookbook.

Doesn’t my sister‘s hair look AMAZING?!! – she’s jumped on the “no-poo” train and has been using Deva Curl. I think I may need to try this for my s’wavy locks. I really want to get away from sulphates and other pore-clogging ingredients.

In training news, I totally kicked butt in my workouts yesterday but my hip is still bothering me. Dailymile is amazing for people not only motivating you but giving you injury suggestions and tips 😉 I love it. So far everyone has been telling me heat, foam roll and stretch. Good old Jamie (she’s not old at all, she’s younger than I am but it just sounded like something I would say) told me to try ice. Ice is the magic healer after all. I don’t know why I haven’t been.

Anyway I did the non-running muscles with weights and without yesterday off the Strong Stride DVD that is currently up for grabs HERE :)

Then I ran for 3.5 miles at the maximum incline my treadmill would go to so I can condition my muscles for those pesky hills. I ran over 10min miles….inclines slow me way down.

Finally I finished up with yoga and a super stretch out session. I felt like a power house! As normally I reward myself for a 3 miler. lol Today speedwork is on the agenda. 9X800’s – we’ll see if I make it.

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway and if you’d like to purchase Strong Stride go here.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday :) it’s my most favourite day of the week. Don’t ask me why. There is no answer.

Questions:

1. have you ever had a funnel cake??

2. what’s your favourite amusement park ride?? – not completely random (funnel cakes are at fairs)

I love the “sky screamer” at Marine Land. I actually don’t even agree with Sea World and Marine Land but had a free pass so I spent the day going back and forth between their one wicked roller coaster and the sky screamer. It was an amazing day filled with adrenaline. I love ALL rides :)

3. what’s your workout today??

  1. I’ve never had funnel cake, which my friends tell me is a travesty since I grew up near the shore (where they serve it every weekend). I came really close one time to trying it with a friend in Massachusetts but then I saw what it actually was and passed. I’m such a weirdo.

    • That IS a travesty. However, to be 100% honest, I never used to like them. My sweet tooth has developed over the years. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had one (aside from monday)

that better be on your bucket list 😉

  2. Yum Yum Yum!!!! I love funnel cake! There is this Irish fest that comes to my town every year and there is a tiny little funnel cake cart that has the best funnel cakes ever!!!! mmm I want one now. :)
Nic’s hair looks fabulous!!! I love the curls!

  3. omggggg! those funnel cakes! AMAZING. they look so delicious. i cried a tiny tear inside since i am in this crazy competition right now where i cant have sweets. i will just save this recipe for when the comp is over :) happy wednesday dear friend!

    • oh I am so sorry Julia. Sometimes being in the health circle I forget that some people visiting may hate me :) I think carrots and celery will make a great substitute :)

  4. funnel cake= AWESOME. i have a deep fryer so I will eventually need to try this out. its my favorite boardwalk food 😀

i’m a fan of the tilt a whirl since i’m scared of heights…hahaha

    workout today=seven slow miles..i’m sick :(

    • Oh man, I’d hate to be afraid of heights. I’m only afraid of falling FROM heights and drowning. argh.

and that suck that you’re sick. Feel better and maybe skip those miles 😉 xo

    • No problem. I never even thought about making them at home. When my mom invited us over and said there would be funnel cake making “no” just wasn’t an option 😉

    • I have no idea when the last time was I had funnel cake prior to this. Really no clue. lol and thanks Vanessa. I think the first mile was rough but then my leg muscles just accepted it. I was soooo slow though. I think it was a 10:40 pace 😀

    • That sucks that BOTH kids are sick now :( but I suppose that usually happens. I hope they are both feeling better and you too! I’d rest, not worth getting sick.

    • Thanks Abbi, I really need to get it checked out. I went to the dr’s but he told me to come back without Logan, as I have a “”busy boy” lol he couldn’t even examine me Logan was getting into everything! sigh

  5. oh mylanta I am drooling all over my keyboard right now. I want me some funnel cakes!!! Yes, plural.

I’ve got a great run planned tonight with my puppy! It’s supposed to be 67 degrees of bliss outside and I am takin’ advantage!!

    • hahaha I love the plural 😉 Colin had two! I couldn’t believe he had room, I felt like I was going to puke.

I am so envious of your beautiful outside dog run! I can’t wait till the sun stays out longer so I can do later runs (not in the dark)

  6. My first funnel cake was eaten this fall…2011. We bought it out of a fundraiser magazine at my boys school…OMG they were devoured in our household…YUM! (And yes, we went through some oil that night)

I usually get sick on rides so I don’t have a favorite and since we are going to Disney for the first time in 13 days…but, who’s counting right?….I am looking into buying some non-drowsy motion sickness stuff…know of any thing good?

Finally, today was cycle class at my Y…loved it!

    • Kathy I love your comments 😉 always these little stories “and yes we went through some oil that night” <—-love it! 😀 I am SO excited for your disney fun time. I don’t normally get sick. Colin and I both get sea sick though, I’d use gravol! take it well before and keep popping it.

  7. I love me some funnel cakes! I feel more deadly now that there’s a recipe out in the world for me to fix them with. Eeeek!

I’m a big fan of the foam roller. I roll about 5 times every day, I’ve gotten to the point where I do it even if I don’t need to. Funny habit.

    • hahaha that was like when I found out you could make cake in a mug! WHO POSTS THAT?!?!? – oh ya, it was Sarah she’s dangerous. lol

and that is INSANE I wish I could be like you and foam roll all the time. I just started a month back and I only do it once or twice a week. you are AMAZING!!!!

      (sorry for all the code)

  8. Haha your comment about me made me laugh! With my birthday approaching I am feeling old, but I know that I’m not!

The funnel cakes look AMAZING! I always love to get fried dough (similar concept) whenever I can! I think I have had a funnel cake too though.

I love roller coasters, they are so much fun! We went to Marine Land one time about four or five years ago and that roller coaster was pretty fun.

I am going to do Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred (for real this time!)

  9. I’m not a huge fan of funnel cake because I’m a salt-a-saurous.

My fave rides are the spinny baskets at Wonderland (like the tea cups at Disney).

Tonight, we are running hills. Yippee!

    • lol I used to be that way…I have no idea what happened to me?! Dan, my sister’s bf made a salty funnel cake with garlic butter and bacon. lol

YAY hills….and by “yay” I really mean a sarcastic “have fun” YIKES

  10. I love Funnel Cakes and love roller coasters even more. The scarier the better for me. My workout today was strength training. I took the last 2 days off and got my butt kicked today.

    • we need to hang out :) your kids can babysit mine! lol and I hate that….I took that last 8 months off strength and want to cry every time….why did I believe cardio was all I needed. STUPID 😛

  11. Ugh, I sure hope your hip is feeling better soon. Sending you healing vibes :)

I have never had funnel cake before and I don’t like roller coasters but my favorite “fair” ride is the Tilt-o-Whirl, the swings & the giant slides :)

I’m taking a rest day today because my workouts yesterday really kicked my butt!

Hope you are having a GREAT day!!!

    • well yes, your DM makes me want to work harder 😉 which is great! so rest it up and enjoy it. and YAY I thought I’d lost you :)

I work tonight which means my day will be far from great but I hope you take whatever great I’m missing and add it to yours <3 xo

      • Aw, don’t worry you can’t get rid of me that easily. I just haven’t been spending a lot of time at the computer lately, been busy, so I’ve been behind on my blog reading :(

Can you and your adorable little family move to California so we can be IRL BBF’s? Thanks! :) xo

        • It has been really busy for me to get around to everyone too! must be February or something :) and yes I’d actually LOVE to live in Cali – I fell in love with Santa Barbara 😀

  12. Mmm! Funnel Cake! There is a huge Strawberry Festival every year in Florida, over in Plant City. It’s coming up in a few weeks and i can’t wait! The best part is getting a funnel cake smothered in fresh strawberries!

Workout today will be a 30 minute run/walk interval session.

    • My mom is over-rated 😉 lol j/k mom – everyone thinks she’s so cool….but she is! Love her.

and you’d be so proud of me – I did more weights today, different muscles of course! YAY

  13. Mmm funnel cakes sound and look delicious! You have such a lovely family :-)

I’m glad you’re workouts have been going well but sorry about your hip, my advice is definitely stretching!! Heat also can be really helpful for some people. Try to avoid sitting too much, low-impact activities, and lots of rest. I feel for you, I haven’t had pain free hips in 5 years so I understand how uncomfortable it can be :-(

I want to get away from sulphates too! I’d love to try those products, I will go check them out :-) Hopefully they ship to the UK and it won’t cost a fortune!

    • Your hair would look so good with that Deva Curl but my sister said the products were SOOOOO expensive. However I can’t believe how good and soft her hair is – no frizz :)

and I am sitting right now. argh. bloggin is injuring me in disguise! 😉 thanks Sophie xoxoxo

  14. Yum! I haven’t had funnel cake in forever. I happen to have excessive amounts of oil, so this is happening.
I’m sorry about your injury! That sucks- I hope it gets better soon.
Strange, but my favorite ride is Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney. I just love it.

    • nice! I cant wait for the recap – oil and batter MMMMMMMMMM

and I think thunder mountain is a good one – lots of people LOVE it. Alas, I haven’t been to Disney since I was in grade 4 :(

  15. Mmmmmm funnel cake! I googled the difference between Funnel Cake and Fried Dough this summer when I was in Maine and the pier had both everywhere. This is a terrible story though because I actually don’t remember the difference…thus, making this a completely pointless post. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. I’m gonna go sit in the sun and fry my brains some more :)

    • Aren’t you in Hawaii ?!?!?!?! you are blog reading while on the islands…..you are crazy 😛 go surf and enjoy yourself!!!! and I loved reading this comment b/c I was waiting for the part where you told me the difference…lol 😀 xoxox hope you’re having fun!!

    • Of course you can Meg :) you’re big awesome smile and personality would fit right in! and I actually HATE running outside when it’s icy, I’m always afraid I’m going to bail and break something, so good for you!!!

  16. I love Wednesdays too <3! And gosh, I've never ever tried a funnel cake :O!?! Silly me. My favorite amusement park ride has got to be Splash Mountain at Disneyland :)

  17. That looks amazing! Although not on my diet sadly! I didn’t work out today…needed a break, and am trying to fish myself out of the pity party lake I threw myself in!!! <3

  18. I love funnel cake! Sweet awesomeness!

I don’t really like amusement rides but if I had to give one I would go with the log ride.

My workout today was a run, lifting and a swim

    • Log ride! nice :) I used to be one of those girls that refused to go on that b/c I didn’t want to get wet and ruin my hair. Can you believe it!?

      and nice workout Christi :)

  19. I’ve never had a funnel cake before. I’ll have to try them out!

Favorite ride… “Wicked” at the amusement park called Lagoon in Utah. There was also some really fun space ship ride at Epcot Center in Florida that was pretty awesome.

Rode 45 minutes on the bike today. It was a sweat fest.

    • I a in shock that you haven’t had one! they are great :) but more like a once a year treat. and I love sweaty bike rides. I have been putting off speedwork. I’m such a slacker. I just may cross train instead today.

  20. I can’t say I have ever tried a funnel cake but looks yummy! My workout today was short yet effective- 20 minutes of HIIT run which really got my heart rate up followed by 10 minutes cool down on the elliptical and some abs exercises!
