Run Plan, New Puppy & Cake!

Well yesterday I decided to make my own training calendar for returning to running. It’s been far too long since I had some kind of schedule to follow. Well, other than the April Calendars. I can’t wait to post the one for May – you can find a sneak peak of it on my facebook page. Thanks DD!

I didn’t follow the 10% rule completely. So weeks have a 20% increase and such but this isn’t a calendar intended for a beginner, it’s intended to get my legs and muscles moving again.

Keep in mind that I am doing daily workouts with the April Challenges :) Β This millage seems like nothing to me now but I remember a time when it was a lot – so I think this will be a great way to keep myself from doing too much too fast.

You’ll notice I dropped down the millage and didn’t increase it on week 3 of the back-to-running plan. This is because I was ready that it’s usually in the 3rd week when injuries show their ugly face again. I have no idea why that is but decided to trust it and back it off a bit.

What do you guys think of this plan?? are weeks 4 & 5 too much? I figured since I have a running foundation it should be ok and I can always play it by ear.

* I love how 5 miles is considered my long run now * lol

Zellers (do you Americans even know what that is?) is closing where we live and of course a Walmart is replacing it πŸ˜‰ but I don’t mind. I love Walmart!

Anyway, because it’s closing down never to return everything in the whole store has been 30-50% OFF! I finally decided to bite the bullet and head on in after getting to leave work early on Saturday.

I left with only toys. I bee-lined right for the section and knew what I needed to grab. This $80 dog that is intended for tween girls. Logan has been begging me for it for quite some time. I just couldn’t justify an $80 fake dog purchase, especially when we have a real dog at home. However, at 50% off I was feeling pretty cool when I came home :)

Best spent money ever.

I also bought him a large amount of crayola products because at %40 off they were a great deal. I needed some new art for my home anyway πŸ˜‰

Well today is my brother’s 25th Birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAY!Β

So I made him a vanilla 9X13 inch cake and covered it in vanilla swiss meringue buttercream (you know I’m addicted to that stuff) the recipe will follow once I taste it and make sure it’s good. <——– normally I pre taste the cake when I cut it to level it out, but I made a perfectly level cake! FIRST TIME EVER!!!!

I’m not going to lie, it made me feel cool – like I was a pro baker or something.

Here’s the cake:

No Martha Stewart, but I’ll take it. I literally mixed the colours and just started “drawing” It was my first time doing leaves and trees and I thought the turned out perfectly. Now if only Jay was a baby boy or a father…..because this definitely has that father’s day/it’s a boy cake vibe πŸ˜‰ lol

1. What would you change on my return to running calendar?? Ever make one yourself??

2. What was your most favourite toy growing up??

I’m going to have to go with Popples!!!! and basically all other 80’s toys featured here :)Β

3. cake decorating?? are you good at it or do you just wing-it like me??

* you didn’t think I’d be crazy enough to get a real puppy when we already have Rex did you??

  1. Awesome cake!!! My decorating skills are usually just blobs of frosting. Your cake looks incredible.

I love that little puppy for Logan. So CUTE. And yay for the sale! Who doesn’t love stuff for cheap!? It’s the only way to go. I hope we get to see some of that Logan art!

  2. I think your plan looks great! You can always just play it by ear with your runs and cut the short or go slow if you start to feel a little “off”. The only thing I’d be worried about is the jump to 5 miles, but like you said if you have a strong running base you should be fine.
    Yayyyyy Ali!

    • You are totally right – I can go how I like. I think going to physio will help loads! then I can do work on myself too. and I just like to have a plan, otherwise I’d do nothing πŸ˜‰ lol

  3. Your plan is great! I know you’ll adjust if you need to, enjoy getting back into it.

Logan is ADORABLE!! I can’t get over how cute and happy he is in those photos. You did good, mom!

Happy birthday to your brother! I want you to make my birthday cake :)

  4. Holy crap, that cake is AMAZING! It was my bday on Saturday, you can make me a cake too if you like. πŸ˜‰ I’m the worst baker ever. I can’t even make that predone Pillsbury crap.
Zellers sucks, I don’t know too many people sorry to see it go. I’m surprised that yours is turning into a Walmart seeing as it was Target who bought the chain out. That puppy is so adorable, I’m glad that you were able to justify getting it at such a great price!
I think that your calendar looks good. You can always scale it back if it gets to be too much right. Things don’t always have to be set in stone. I always have my runs & other fitness things on a calendar, I find that I’m more accountable to things that way. Good luck with it!

    • Just to let you know that Target did not buy all of Zellers. They sold some of their leases that Target bought to Walmart. That is why some are converting to Walmart. And most of the stores are converting to Urban 90 which is a division of walmart.

    • Happy early Birthday Sam :) I will have to make you a cake. You’re right – it is easier to hold yourself accountable when you have a calendar πŸ˜‰

  5. I’ve done a couple of return to running ‘plans’. The most successful ones were the least rigid ones…the ones where I really just listened to my body and paid very close attention to what she was saying. You’re younger than I am so yours is probably good, but if it were mine I’d do the 1.5-mile runs 3x a week for another week, the 2-mile runs for 2 weeks, then a 2/2/2.5 week, followed by a 2.5/2.5/3 week, followed by a 1.5/2.5/3.5 week…in other words, I would take it a little slower. But I am waaayyyyyy older than you and had sat out of running for a whole lot longer. I’m thinking of you a lot and really hoping you’re able to get back into things quickly and successfully…you deserve it :)

    • Hey Sarah! Thanks for visiting. and it doesn’t impact me, like it does you but I have always hated to see canadian stores bought out by american ones. I work retail too. blah!

  6. As far as your running calendar, I would have to ask “what is your goal? Do you have a race scheduled or is this just a get back into running plan?

and yeah, the cake looks good, and I do not eat cakes!

    • My goal is – to slowly ease back into running and then go from there. I have no races and nothing coming up, I just want a solid base I can start building off of after it’s done :)

  7. I think your training calendar lloks perfect- I LOVE having a plan to follow and I think this one looks great!
    Beautiful cake :-)
My favorite toy were my little ponies, not shocking considering my job now!

    • Thank you! I worked hard on it but I may end up backing it off a bit. and my little ponies were amazing. They were way better than the ones they have now.

  8. Hey girl – So we are back in Colorado. Sadly it was time to leave the island. I took a few minutes to catch up on blogs and glanced over your come back to running (I am working on my own at the moment – the biggy being just getting out the door) and I remembered something my trainer mentioned to me. For females during our special time of month we are more prone to injuries. Not exactly sure the specific reasoning behind this as the discussion was a few years ago and it is something relatively new that is being researched. But definitely ease up at that time. Good Luck on your come back and I will cross all digits for a smooth and injury free return. I will work on catching my breath at this high altitude haha!!!! xoxo

  9. Ummm if you ever read my Valentine’s Day post you will quickly learn how UNTALENTED I am in the decorating department.

Logan looks so happy with your purchase – totally worth whatever cost!

My rule of thumb with training calendars – do what works for you – if you feel pain don’t be ashamed to take a day or 2 off. You’ll be grateful you did. Just listen to the bod!

  10. I have a training schedule that’s on my fridge, but it’s nowhere near as cute as this! The schedule looks good, but maybe 5 miles is too ambitious?? I only say that because of the 10% rule. That means that after 3.5 miles you shouldn’t really add more than a half mile at a time (I would say a mile MAX), and you are increasing by 1.5. Just a thought. That isn’t to say that I haven’t done that before and ended up just fine :). I’M NO EXPERT.

I’m so happy for you that you can get back to running!

    • Maybe 5 IS too ambitious. I’ll have to see how it goes from here. I’m not going to start it till next week so my PT can weigh in πŸ˜‰

and I’m happy but I almost don’t like it *gasp* b/c it’s so defeating having to start all over!

  11. Ali, that cake is AMAZING. Seriously! My mom thinks that you should start a bakery. I don’t even think I would be able to eat that, it’s so cool.
Pictures of Logan are so cute! I have to say that when I read the title I did think you had gotten a new puppy. πŸ˜‰
I loved those My Little Pony! I had the big castle for them and everything. :) I also loved Polly Pockets. Both have changed so much these days! I like the original ones better. :)

    • hahaha thanks to your mom but I hate baking…..I just like decorating and eating πŸ˜‰ lol

You should see my friend Kathryn’s cakes they are amazing!!!

and my little pony is the coolest πŸ˜‰

  12. I think that plan is a safe way to get back into it, and you still have your cross training in there to keep you energized and strong.

That cake is spectacular, now if only I had the patience and artistic ability to copy it :)

  13. My return to running Calendar started looking a bit like yours, minus the 5 miles in less than a month. And it was too much for me, I had to back it way down, my poor ego! BUT, I was sidelined for longer and because I was pregnant. LOL. Just go with what your body says.

    That cakes is GORGEOUS!

  14. ummmm wow. that cake looks so incredible and detailed! amazing! i think your run plan sounds perfect! i agree…you had worked yourself up to a strong base before so I think it will all come back more quickly that you might expect :) and those pics of L are too dang cute! love them!

  15. Oh my goodness that cake does look so awesome! You are right up there with Maratha Stewart I’d say! πŸ˜‰ haha
Logan looks so happy, good purchase mom! ha That is so sweet!!!
Good luck with your training schedule looks like a good one! One week left of Abs and Arms April WAHOO!!! :)

  16. Beautiful cake! Holy piping Batman! I always bake the kids their birthday cakes. They come out fine but pretty much the same year to year. Need to shake it up.
I need a good Cayola sale. Our dogs eat them like they’re treats.

  17. Love your cake! You’ve got some mad cake decorating skills! Tomorrow is the twins’ birthday, and I need to make a cake. Um, no plan at all yet, so I guess that means I like to wing it.

  18. I’m definitely going to be following your May challenge (just checked it out on fb), it sounds brilliant!

Such a cute pair of photos of Logan, he’s adorable and I love that you were able to buy him a toy that he’d been wanting for ages.

Finally your cake is AMAZING! Seriously it looks fantastic, could have been professionally made :-) I love decorating cakes but I’m not as good as that! I have my eye on a gorgeous cake decorating book though…

  19. I think your plan looks pretty sensible. You’ll have to make sure that your cross-training isn’t stressing your injury but I like the way you’ve got good breaks between each of the runs. As long as you’re flexible – if you feel like your injury’s flaring up make sure you back down.

Love the cake!! You are a real artist in icing. I bet your brother was thrilled.

  20. Your cake is awesome! I love making and decorating cakes but I usually work with fondant… I certainly don’t have fab piping skills like you!
I think those pictures of Logan are going to keep me smiling all day… That’s pure, unadulterated joy all over his face! So sweet :)
I always loved ‘My Little Ponies’ growing up!

  21. 1. My initial reaction would be to step back mileage on Week 4 and then up it again in Week 5. That said, your mileage isn’t crazy high so I’m not sure a “recovery week” is as important. Maybe play it by ear and see how you feel.
    2. Fave toy was a stuffed Tigger doll. I actually wore one completely out and had to get another.
    3. I wish I had half your talent at cake decorating. I have great ideas, but my execution leaves something to be desired. The 3D John Deere tractor I did for my son’s 2nd bday was a proud moment, but I panicked and called a friend that used to be a baker at the local grocery store (and my son’s godfather) to come help me finish it and it came out much more like what it looked like in my mind with his help. I love themed bdays and I made a tank with Fruit by the Foot tracks one year, a cowboy boot another year and a pokemon ball with matching cupcakes another year. My daughter got a princess castle that didn’t quite turn out the way I had envisioned and a guitar that wasn’t half bad. Wish your spatulas were closer to me.

  22. happy bday to the brother spatula!! hehe…i wish i could have some of that yummy cake. :)

i think ur plan looks good/smart overall, the only suggestion i would say is that for week 3, still keep the total mileage the same, but a part of me thinks u would be better doing 3x2mile runs mon/wed/fri. that’s just my opinion, doing the lower miles at one time but spread out more i feel would be easier on the body. but then u’d still be able to come back with a mileage boost the next two weeks. but that’s just my two cents..either way YAY for running! :)

  24. Haha. Popples are so awesome. That’s a beautiful running plan. I can’t believe I’ve been running for almost three years, and I’ve never really done a calendar. I do pretty well figuring it out on the fly.

    • That’s pretty impressive that you can run without a plan. I’ve been injured so I thought making a plan would hold me accountable and stop me from doing too much too fast πŸ˜‰ thanks for visiting!
