My crazy weekend!

This weekend felt non-stop. That’s really the only way to describe it.

Friday nights Colin goes to “jam” to relive his youth through his love of music. ie: band practice ;) So I made this pizza dough and decided to make it healthier by topping mine with cottage cheese, tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and onions (I added green olives because I love them) It was a huge success! I loved it :)

My friend Charlene comes over some fridays and we usually have a few drinks (thanks for the healthy drink options – I had gin, water and lime with a splash of tonic! my new fav) and talk. She’s a makeup artist and she’s british – blonde with an accent – I know! I’ve been trying to convince her to do makeup video tutorials so we were practicing.

Saturday morning I had to work at the retail job. I haven’t discussed this on my blog but if you’ve noticed I’ve actually been able to comment on your blogs and have been responding to comments – it’s because I’ve been getting NO shifts at my new job :(  They hired another girl while I was away and it’s been really shady. Needless to say I’ve been attending interviews and dropping off resumes for work elsewhere.

* I just wanted to show you my amazing breakfast – it was so yummy: pumpernickel rye, all natural pb, squished raspberries and blackberries with a dollop <– I’ve always wanted to use this term, of greek yogurt and sprinkled with cinnamon :) YUM!

When I got home, after a pit stop at the bank and grocery store, I quickly set my mind to FOOD-Mode. Which is a mode I enjoy unless pressed for time, which I was. I wanted to make a chocolate pie for my mom’s birthday that was a healthier option. I spent hours constructing it and it was my biggest baking fail to date :’(

It looks amazing!

It tasted too sweet (thanks healthier sugar supplements – agave, stevia = YUCK) It didn’t stay hard…when whipped cream can’t help it, you know you’ve screwed up :(

It was gross. If looks could kill this pie sure could.

On the flip side I made Quinoa Macaroons, as my facebook friends know, and they turned out amazing :) Thanks so much Carmen for the suggestion. It worked out perfectly for me because I was in charge of bringing a treat to Pirates of Penzance (a play) we were going to in Stratford with my Grandmother.

I went to bed early and got up Sunday morning for my “long” run. Normally I run with Leah, but with my time restraints I decided it’d be best if I ran alone.

The run was great! I was actually laughing at myself for thinking it might be easy to skip it. It was the best part of my whole weekend. I felt so alive and maintained a decent pace that left me feeling very accomplished.

I got home and went from sweaty beast to hottie theatre-buff in 1 hour :)

* I felt very safari -esq in these colours but I knew I could pull it off :)

My brother and I drove together and it was nice to check up. We saw something CRAZY on the highway and thankfully I managed to capture a picture…..

Yes those are zombies in a pickup! I would like everyone to note that although this spectacle was truly epic in large proportions, the people responsible for driving the car were douches. Yep, they really were. If you’re driving with Zombies, be cool! FACT.

Once in Stratford we had a picnic lunch by the Avon river. It was a beautiful area and there were tons of people all around.

Then we went to the theatre. The play was fun and the first half was really funny however if I were to review it I’d say – meh. It was “light & fun” as my grandmother stated and overall it was just nice to be able to be with her :)

We had a great day!

We saw a man that was dressed the exact same as I was but he literally raced out of the theatre before we could ask him for a photo ;) sorry for my pitiful blogging. Next time I’ll run after him.

Questions:

1. what is the craziest thing you’ve seen while driving??

I don’t know how you can top Zombies in a caged truck…but try :)

2. are you a theatre lover?? if so what’s your favourite play??

My top 3 plays to date based on performance and directing are King Lear, Dirty Dancing & My Fair Lady.

3. have you ever had a baking/cooking fail?? was it so bad you had to throw it out??

4. are you good at doing your own makeup??

I don’t think I’m horrible, but I definitely don’t have a clue what I’m doing. Char’s tips definitely helped me.

    • I loved DIrty Dancing :) it was amazing! and thanks about the shoes – believe it or not those sandals are velcro!!! which equates to MY favourite shoes.

  1. I actually just went to the play Hairspray at our local theater that was amazing! I have also been to the Lion King in Chicago a couple times and let me tell you, it is MAGNIFICENT! It would definitely be something Logan would like when he gets older. :)
I tried making soft pretzels once, that was a disaster! Th dough wouldn’t stretch and was awful looking. I threw that one out!

    • Sweet! I’ve never seen hairspray but I would love to. Believe it or not waaaaaaay back when Colin and I first started dating he took me to see The Lion King for my 18th birthday :D I was BEYOND THRILLED!!!! it was amazing!!!!

I would love to take Logan to that next year, once he’s fully potty trained – good call ;)

  2. I love going to the theatre! I’m taking my youngest son who is into the Beatles right now to see Backbeat next month. He’s pretty meh about it but I’m excited!

The Zombie Truck is hilar! I can see the guys being DBags thinking they’re cool and all. LOL

Most new things that I try to cook are fails. Boo. I can’t even do the predone pillsbury cookies. :(

I have one look for makeup and four hairstyles. That’s it. I am not creative in that area either. Lame.

    • That’s awesome Sam!!! I can’t wait to drag Logan out with me :P and yes, the peeps in the truck were overly angry, just glaring at us, while we smiled and waved! lol

I wear my hair up….or down ;) scandalous

  3. I think the craziest thing I’ve seen while driving was a helicopter in pieces =O ..Clearly it had been in a gnarly crash, and it was HUGE on the open road.

Also, I think I’m a theatre fan, but I’ve never been to Broadway to find out! If I ever get the opportunity I totally want to see Phantom of the Opera and the Lion King.

I’ve seen O at the Bellagio in Vegas a couple times, and always enjoy it. In fact, a lot of the shows in Las Vegas are worth seeing — so I guess I do have some experience outside of NYC:)

If you (or anyone!) make it to Maui, I absolutely recommend ‘Ulalena! It’s a great play illustrating the Hawaiian culture, then and now.

PS: LOTS of baking fails and happy accidents in the kitchen! I’ve only thrown out ONE GIANT mistake to date though. It still hurts thinking about it because of all the amazing ingrédients

    • Phantom and Lion King are AMAZING! the phantom was the first ‘true’ production I had ever seen, I was in grade 8. I loved it.

This was the first mistake that went completely in the garbage and I feel the same way: hurts to think about all those amazing nutritious ingredients WASTED

Oh and While in O’ahu Colin and I saw “Ha Breath of Life” at the Polynesian Cultural Centre and we were blown away :)

  4. I have baking fails all the time. Your chocolate pie looks amazing, bummer that it wasn’t. My weekend was a little crazy too with tons of in laws hanging around.

Sorry about the job thing sounds like a dirty trick :( Hope you find another job soon.

  5. Ugh sorry to hear about your other job acting that way. The same thing happened to my sister. They offered the job, but never called her to schedule her start time and avoid her everytime she calls.

Your pie still looks delicious even if it didnt stand up to the task of being a pie. I have had so many bake fails, its almost funny.

    • Ya, it was soooo crazy. I was working solid for 2 weeks. Went away and then I only get “on call” shifts, which I’m never called in for. I went in, got my paycheque and asked my manager face-to-face “do you even want/need me to work here?” and he said yes. I call on Sunday to get my shifts…..I don’t have any!?! WEIRD

  6. I used to have lots of baking fails but not so much any more. Practice makes perfect. But I’ve never baked with stevia. I’m old-school when it comes to baking. Butter, sugar, flour – simple fresh ingredients.

  7. Look at you hot stuff! Where are those shorts from! Need them.

Nothing is worse than a baking fail because youre so excite for the treats. You’re going to read this right – I forgot oil and eggs in brownies once. Don’t ask.

    • They are from my place of employment ;P It’s a Canadian company but I could send you a pair ;)

and lol brownies are extremely touchy little things…..without mishaps. I feel you ;)

  8. Sounds like a crazy but pretty fabulous weekend! Your pizza looks delicious, I love homemade pizza :-) I love that your friend comes over on Fridays for a little drink and chat, that’s such a nice thing to do to relax at the end of a long week!

I’m really sorry about your new job, that sounds really irritating and frankly not on! I hope you find something better soon, preferably somewhere where they treat you a bit better!

On a more positive not you look gorgeous in your theatre outfit, just look at those legs ;-) I love the shorts, I’ve been looking for a pair like that all year! The picnic and theatre trip sounds just lovely, I adore that kind of thing :-)

    Have a great week Ali!

  9. I can’t say that I have seen zombies in a truck, but I have seen zombies running through the downtown area of my town. We had a crew in town a few weeks ago filming a movie (that I tried to get a part in as said zombie). We actually watched them as we were at one of our wine tastings :)

I have kitchen fails all the time. I really hate when that happens!

  10. Overall it looks like a fun weekend to me. Minus the no shifts at the new job, what up with that? Shady indeed. My baking fail was with quinoa cookies no less. I think I didn’t cook the quinoa long enough. Boo.

Add some awesome...
