Olympics, Runs, Avocado Growing

So I assume everyone’s been watching the Olympics. It’s definitely been on the screen in the background at our house. The funny thing is that neither Colin, nor I know any athletes names. We aren’t crazy sport/athlete followers and it was only just over a year ago that I even got into fitness. I am really loving all the gymnastics and I wish I hadn’t fought my mom to get out of them when I was younger, as now I am wishing my body could do that stuff :)

…but it can’t :)

I am excited to watch running for the first time since becoming a runner. I’ve watched a few televised marathons but never paid any attention to running at the olympic level before so this will be new for me :) Too bad about Paula Radcliffe. Injuries suck as it is. I can’t imagine having to turn down running in the olympics due to one.

Anyway, I’ve been doing some running myself. I ran 6 miles yesterday morning. It was lovely. It really was. I just ran and enjoyed it. I played Coldplay the entire time, since I’m still in the “re-live the concert” window, and it really opened my eyes. I think I need more spirituality in my life. I haven’t been accessing that side of me as much as in the past. I’m excited to open it up again :)

I was so into my surroundings and connecting to everything that I didn’t even bother to take blog photos for you guys. (other then the one above) The only time my camera made an appearance was when this group of runners past me and waved in a cocky manner ;) To bad I saw them when they started and I was already 7k up on them. Please. Give me strength. <—- seriously I need it ;)

In other news, I ate mashed potatoes last night with my dinner and I felt soooooo sick afterwards. I am beginning to notice that what I thought was “feeling full” is really my body disagreeing with some foods. I am planning on making a doctors appointment to get everything checked out once and for all. I also treated myself to some garlic cheesy bread :) I figured, if I already felt sick why not make it worse :P

My energy levels haven’t really gone up. I’m still very tired all the time. Even though my daily snacks now include mostly veggies and fruits :) I’ve been experimenting and eating really well.

I never knew you could sauté Kale in a pan and have it taste so amazing! definitely doing that again!

Also just because Meg has wanted to know. I started growing an avocado – right now it still just looks like a split pit. However, if you look closely you can see it’s finally dropping a root down :)

I started growing it by wrapping it in moist paper towels and left it for a week. Once the shoot could be seen I poked it with 3 toothpicks and rested it on the top of a mason jar filled with water. 1/3 of the pit must be submerged in water. You can’t plant the seed until the roots are well established and the green tree begins to grow. I’ll keep you posted. You also have to keep it in indirect light, which proves easy when you’re growing inside :)

PS: Logan is the coolest :) xo

  1. We have a pretty big garden…growing corn, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, bean, carrots, and broccoli. Lots of variety! I am excited for harvest time – that’s the most fun part! Inside, I have some aloe plants. They are great for burns and other skin problems. I really want to get The Kid a Venus Fly Trap. I had one as a kid too, and they are so fun to watch!

I love the Olympics. I love watching swimming, diving, gymnastics, track/field, and actually this year – women’s basketball. I know one of the players, so it is fun to watch her as an Olympian!

  2. I can’t grow things! They die in my presence. Oh wait, I do have a crowing achievement when it comes to growing: I have a cactus that I grew from a seed to over 1 foot tall. I left it at my parents’ house though, and I haven’t been there in 2 years, so I’m really not sure of the status of my dear cactus!

  3. yay for a nice six miles! Congrats girl. You and your son would be dominating in the Olympics, I mean I see the balance beam or even floor routine as ideal haha. I am sorry about the feeling sick, hopefully a doctor’s visit can test for allergies.

  4. Very cool avocado growing experiment! I should try this with my kids. They want to plant the seed of everything we eat. My favorite Olympic team right now is the US women’s soccer. After almost winning the world cup, I was really hopeful for some redemption in the olympics. I watched the women’s bike race yesterday, which I surprised myself by really getting into that. Not usually a huge biking fan.

  5. We have the Olympics on in the background a lot, too… it’s been fun! Congrats on getting your 6 miles in!
I’m intrigued by that sprouting avocado. We used to have a big garden, but currently just have a few potted plants- herbs, peppers, tomatoes, etc.

  6. Logan is the coolest and the cutest!

We are loving the Olympics! I’m definitely a member of Lochte Nation and we can’t wait for track and field, the triathlon and the marathon. We basically watch everything except boxing and some basketball.

No vegetable garden for us, but I would love to have one someday!

  7. Soooo… the other day I was crashing during my long 9 mile run in the humidity – and I found someone to pace behind and he kept m motivated – I kept having to talk myself OUT of trying to pass him though.

I love gymnastics. I won’t lie – I find running can be very boring to watch…

  8. watching the gymnastics at the mo-some seriously hot men-check out the German team…!!

great to head out for a run and just enjoy it-had a few like that this summer-actually all of the runs since my last half i have just enjoyed.

  9. I will have to try to grow avocados. I love them! the only time I got passed on a trail (usually just run my own routes) was when I was biking. This serious biker dude passed me on his fancy bike and I really wanted to catch up. There was no way though. He was way too fast!

  10. I am growing a garden for the 1st time this year. Pretty excited about it. Tomatoes, jalapenos, banana peppers, zucchini and beans growing pretty well. Never thought I would be able to grow anything. Awesome on the avocado! ! Maybe I should try that one.

  11. I had quite the veggie garden going earlier in the season… until the neighbourhood bunnies discovered it! I started the year with snow peas, lettuce, green beans, basil, thyme, kale, garlic, parsley, leeks and tomatoes. The kale plants lasted all abuot 4 days before the were eaten… and as of now, the peas and lettuce are totally GONE. I managed to harvest 1 dinner’s worth of green beans until the bunny began eating those plants too. The herbs are still doing well though and my tomato plants are just fierce!! I’m 5’3 and they’re taller than me!! I can’t wait for the tomatoes to start turning red!

As for the olympics, I was away all weekend doing the lazy cottaging/eating thing, so I haven’t had a chance to watch anything yet. When I do watch though, it’s all about the Show Jumping for me since that’s my sport. The diving is always pretty cool to watch too.

  12. I’ve been watching a lot of Olympics so far. Once every 4 years is not too often for me to root for our country in entertaining sports that I don’t usually see on TV.

Often I’ll be running on the track about 8 miles into a workout when someone starts up who is running faster. I always think to myself, “They’re only going about 1/2 or 1 mile, wish they knew how far I’ve already gone”.

  13. I am just in love with the Olympics this year. Track and field has always been my favorite, but I love the swimming and gymnastics, too. I am also fascinated with the women’s weight lifting.
We have had a garden every year for the past 4 years… until this year. I just didn’t get my butt in gear in time. Sad.

  14. I have to say this much about energy…I started cutting down on the amount of gluten I eat and I have noticed a difference. Pasta especially has been a big culprit for low energy. Do you eat a lot of breads or wheats?

  15. First, yes Logan is the coolest! ha he is just too cute! I love when he peaks his head into your photos! :)
About every 4 years, I always wish I would have been a gymnast! That is my favorite sport to watch! I really love watching them, they are so talented they way they can control and move their bodies! Plus they are all SO ridiculously toned, I am so jealous!

  16. The Olympics have become a complete obsession in my house. The first thing my sister and I did last night when we got home was turn on the Olympics! lol
I am super excited to watch the runners, I have never really got into the running before, but I have only been running for about 3 years. Very exciting!

  17. Try adding chia seeds to your salads. I’ve noticed a difference in my sleepiness when using them. Although sadly been lazy about it lately. Lol. I love avocados! Yum!

  18. I used to grow lots of avocados before we moved onto the boat. I just put the toothpics in them and let them drop about 1/2 inch into a glass of water. It was about a month before they grew roots and I could plant them. Lovely plants… glossy leaves. You have to prune them otherwise you will get one long stalk and nothing else.

I am loving the Olymic coverage we get but honestly relate more to Winter sports than Summer.

Good to see the doc re grastro problems. Good luck with that.

  19. Watching diving on the Olympics right now! I love the gymnastics. :)
    Yay for the long run!!!
We have a huge avocado growing at out house. We peeled the skin off of it before we put it in the water. Its getting really big now!

Add some awesome...
