First off – THANK YOU
You all have a friend in me, that’s for sure! Thanks for not only being supportive, but sharing your personal stories too. It was really nice to see that I’m not alone and that all of us ‘cool’ people have issues developing friendships
———————————————————-
Let’s lighten the mood and end the week off right by doing a classic “update” post!
1. Colin used the tiger balm……it ended with similar results to my own experience. NOT GOOD. Tiger balms strategy seems to be burnt the completely crap out of your skin so that your muscles no longer have pain.

* I’m the best wife – Colin loves when I sneak into the bathroom and take blog photos of him in the shower
….he really does
2. I went to the Dr’s – he shot my arm with a vaccine (I needed tetanus and whooping cough apparently) that has literally left me feeling like I got punched in the arm. It’s been days and I seriously can’t feel my upper shoulder. Not to mention I’ve had a headache that won’t go away and I’ve been sleeping a lot….hmmmmmm

* does your doctors office have so many pamphlets on his bulletin board???? mine literally just leaves everything on his…..he has his children’s art in there …..his children are older than I am now ;P
3. Smoker’s Helpline contacted me and asked if I’d be up for doing a couple interviews about my quitting smoking journey. I agreed. Then I found out it’s actually for a Korean documentary and that I’ll most likely have subtitles below me

* Still I’m excited to share my story. Good luck decoding my slang, crap-tastic English
4. Logan has been the worst child ever. I seriously feel like I’m going insane and my patience is wearing thin. It’s like he’s literally just given up on human communication and now only screams at me. I am all for hearing your suggestions of how to handle this – I’ve been ignoring bad behaviour (unless it’s timeout worthy, like throwing stuff at me) and rewarding/encouraging good behaviour. I’m ready for this stage to be over!

* It’s only 8:30am and we’ve already had 2 timeouts and 3 meltdowns. (!!) emotions are strong things. I just want to be able to give him the proper tools to deal with them.
5. I made a clean eating pumpkin pie “blizzard” and I just can’t wait for a real one!!! I’m going to try and go get one early today….I’ll let you know if I succeed! For those of you that don’t know – it’s my most favourite treat EVER!

* for those interested I simply mixed, Greek yogurt, pumpkin purée, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and rolled oats – yum!
…..ya so those are my 5 things. I know, super interesting and deep aren’t they
I also wanted to let you guys know that yesterday I did end up doing my speedwork and I actually ran one of my miles in under 8mins!!!! which hasn’t happened in over 8 months
Logan couldn’t believe it either!

I needed to sleep again this morning but I know I’ll get my 10 mile cycle in at some point AND I hope to go back to 100% morning workouts next week

Including daily yoga, foam rolling and religious post-run stretching. I guess that was actually like 6 or 7 things….oops!
—————————————————————————————
Questions:
1. what is your go to muscle pain product??? do you have one??
Epsom salt baths!!! foam roller and Bengay
2. vaccines – yay or nay?? why??
I just listen to whatever my doctor tells me. He delivered me and I’ve trusted him my whole life. He’s always really awesome about telling me when he hasn’t got a clue and always refers me to wherever I need to go
so I trust him shooting me with needles.
3. MOMS – help me!!!!!!! what is with almost 3!!! I’m literally left staring down at a screaming kid for over 50% of my day ;P
4. favourite guilty pleasure in treat form??
you know mine
I am starting back morning workouts next week, wish me luck. I have to get my butt out of the bed and moving! I always feel so tired in the mornings now and I really want to change that! Plus I have to get some strength workouts in and that is what I will be doing in the mornings, so I guess you don’t have to be completely awake to complete those, although I will have Jillian Michaels screaming at me through the tv lol
Good luck. I actually LOVE them. It’s was just 2 days this week that my body said – NO – you must sleep. and I listened. I’m going to have to work harder on going to sleep earlier, and then getting up won’t be so bad
My main muscle pain product is stretching and if it is really bad – ibuprophen.
Vaccinations: Very Pro. I’m a health researcher and it INFURIATES me that the shoddy work of one researcher who was totally unethical and used really poor science caught the attention of Hollywood and has put people in danger of catching very preventable and potentially fatal diseases. And thank you for reminding me to ask my doctor about a whooping cough booster! Lots of outbreaks right now.
PS – i guess i didn’t really answer the “why”
For the most part, unless you are allergic to the stuff that the vaccine grows in (like eggs), the worst thing that will happen to you when you get a vaccine is a sore arm. (oh gosh the H1N1 vaccine hurt my arm for a week). The best thing is that you won’t get the illness you’re being vaccinate for and you help create “herd immunity” to potentially eradicate the disease in your area (which is why people in Canada don’t get polio anymore for the most part). Yes, the vaccine might not “take” and you might not develop full immunity or no immunity at all. But if other people get vaccinated as well, the chance that you will then get the disease is lower…so a bit of a win win.
For example – my sister got vaccinated against whooping cough as a kid. She somehow still got it…it was awful. I shared a room with her but didn’t get it. So yes, sucked for my sister, but because the rest of the family had “immunity,” we only had to deal with her being sick and the entire family wasn’t taken down.
I agree – Lyndsey and I were just talking about this b/c I was actually beginning to delve into the “vaccines are bad” but it makes sense. Why get it if we don’t have to
and yes, polio! It’s so cool that we can all be totally immune to it. It’s like you said, even if it gets one of us, the rest are safe. I’ve actually hear that they’re vaccinating kids for chicken pox now! crazy.
My doctor told me that the whooping cough would be more so beneficial for my offspring – as I wouldn’t die from it, but Logan and other potential babies might, so I got it
I think it is great to ask questions and look into things. If you do want any information on vaccines, let me know – I’m happy to help!
Thanks
I really want a pumpkin pie blizzard! Good thing we now have a Dairy Queen in Rochester, I just need to wait until they are available.
I use arnica gel for muscle pain, it doesn’t tingle and it definitely won’t do what it did to you and Colin!
Oh I am so excited you guys have a dairy queen…..I’m heading there tonight as garden girl told me she got one yesterday!!!! I think they have to get the stuff a few days early….I’m totally going in and asking for one
I’m soooooo excited for your marathon! I wish i could come watch!!!!
I went to the doctors also and I need shots. :/ Im freaked out by needles so not looking forward to it! Oh my gosh, i cannot believe how big Logan has gotten! In the picture of him on the treadmill he looks huge! I could not believe that the blizzards were all ready available here! I was sooooo excited!
As you know, I also hate needles BUT I’d take shots all day long over having blood drawn from me
I hate that even more!
and Logan is so big….I notice that my posts including him don’t get as big of a response, so unfortunately he’s fallen off the blog
lol
My husband is obsessed with tiger balm! It drives me crazy because it’s stinky. I had one negative experience with it as a teenager, so refused to use it until hubs nagged me into it a few months ago. It ended up feeling kind of nice. Hubs and I rarely agree on healthcare…his parents are hippies so he always wants to do these super expensive alternative treatments, and I have a doctorate so I’m always asking, “Is this empirically validated?” Then he pouts because I don’t listen to him. So sometimes I try his stupid treatments just to get him to stop nagging!
LOL I am glad it works for you – so it never burns your skin like that?!?!?! PS: I linked your page on facebook today
and I am a hippy/science lover so I always try to meet somewhere in the middle….conversations must be fun to watch with you and your hubs
I enjoy what you share with us and how you share it. Thanks! It was nice to see a picture of Logan on the tready
.
Regarding number 4 – I wish I had known this when my children were small, but children reflect our moods and challenges (I know, not fair!). So, number 4 might be related to number 2, plus your feelings that you posted about yesterday (I think it was yesterday – fabulous, straight from the heart post!). Plus anything else that is going on around Logan.
Another thing I wish I had known when I was busy putting my children in time out, is that often what the child needs instead is a ‘time-in’. More cuddling, more playing with the adult, more attention in whatever way they can let you know that they need. He needs help to process what is going on inside of him that triggered the screaming, throwing, or whatever outside action his inner self translated into at the time. I have links that I have found helpful, but this is my first time ever posting a comment on a blog, and I am not computer savvy, so am afraid I will lose what I have already written if I go and try to find links. So I will leave it at that for now. For vaccines, they get a nay vote from me!
Thanks Marie – and hopefully you don’t mind that I curse the treadmill all the time
I do appreciate it
and these are awesome tips!!!! you’re right, children are like little sponges. He could just be picking stuff off me. We have tried to help him deal with his feelings in positive ways….it did work but recently his tantrums seem to be more for getting our attention, like you said. So we’ve been trying to ignore them and then focus on giving him more of our time in positive attention….I hope it works
If you can respond to this email you can send the links through there…..if it doesn’t work I won’t worry about it
thanks!!!!
I have no problem at all with you cursing that treadmill! It can take it!! Really, I’m not sure what else it can expect, making people work so hard on one hand (if it had a hand), while silently mocking them when they fail to give it the attention it thinks it needs. Bad treadmilll!!
Ohhh sorry for the meltdowns. Izzy and I have been have a hard time lately too. She immediately going into whine mode – and then meltdown. Which leaves me in meltdown mode. I deal with emotional kids all day long and then come home to that? Really? I expect my kids to be perfect all of the time. I don’t think that’s unrealistic. Ha! Way to go on the sub 8 min mile. You rock, my dear.
I love BenGay – but Ward hates it when I rub it all over my legs. So I’ve been using a Hylands muscle rub (less smell). It actually works.
One thing I do about the 3 yr old issue tell Izzy to go in another room until she calms down. She balks at first, but then goes into another room – screams for a bit/long time – then comes back in. It took a lot of training and me redirecting her….but I think (6 months later) we’re getting there. Or – better yet – I tell her she’s giving me a headache and I leave. She hates that and stops. It’s so hard to stay calm. I think I’m going to start drinking again. Seriously.
BEST.COMMENT.EVER.
I literally just died laughing. I’m dead
pumpkin pie blizzard, holy shiz deliciousness
Yes, you must find a DQ near you this October and get yourself one
BEST THING EVER!
For Logan, I would tell him you can’t understand him when he is yelling. If that doesn’t work, ask him why he is yelling, and ask him to use his inside voice. Ask him why he thinks it is ok to scream inside, because no one else is. Or try whispering to him. He might then try to mock you and whisper back to you.
Oh I’ve tried those things already….I think perhaps it might have just been my mood and/or him coming off that sickness as he was much better today
and good idea about using the whispering
GENIUS Lindy!
Did the whispering work? Normally at his age, it seems fascinating to hear whispering.
Everyone says “terrible 2′s”, but the 3′s were the worst for my kids. I do vaccines, but all the stories in the media scare me. Sounds like you are starting to feel better:) Yay!
everyone told me 3 sucked…..I’m not ready for it
lol
and YES I am feeling much better….though I still want to tell my late friend that her boyfriend is an arrogant douchebag
lol
I didn’t comment yesterday but I’ll do it here. It takes me years to form significant friendships; not a great thing when I move, so hopefully we’re staying put for a while.
I am in favour of vaccines, though I definitely understand parents’ desires to split up the schedule so their children are not overdosed on 5 at once. The doctor who claimed that vaccines caused autism manipulated his findings; he has lost his license. There has been a whooping cough epidemic here in the past 2 years because of lack of immunization; at least one baby died from it so to me not immunizing is not safe for the community (just my 2 cents).
I agree with splitting up the vaccines…which I think most doctors do. but yes, we should all be immunized if we can!!! why not
it’s safer and makes sense!
PS: it doesn’t take me long to throw my entire self and heart at someone so I’m used to getting hurt
but I love that you commented
thanks Tri girl xo
I do use Tiger Balm (the white one, not th red one) and have for years…. but a few months ago I found something new and quite good called Ben Gay Zero Degrees.
It is a roll on like a deodorant, that you keep in the freezer. It goes on a bit gooey and smelly but is icy cold which is a reliever and very quickly the smell and goo disappear and it works very well to relieve pain and cramping too. I love that it can be worn to bed and doesn’t stain your sheets or clothing. I did a review on my blog a while back and mention it once in a while. Love the stuff.
Hope Logan gets over this stage soon. It would be hard! Sounds to me like you are handling it the right way though, Mama.
Have a great Friday.Hope that arm feels better soon.
see we have the red….must try this white to see if there’s a difference but I have that benGay product you speak of and I LOVE IT!!!!! it is comparable to a deodorant stick lol
enjoy your weekend Elle! and say Hey to the Capt for me
The oldest just turned 4 at the beginning of the month so we haven’t exactly tackled the fours yet but, so far, three has been the worst. I agree with a previous comment that he may be acting out because of what you’re going through right now. Plus, there’s supposed to be a full moon this weekend which seems to affect kids (and the weirdos come out too lol). My oldest has been terrible this week.
For muscle pain, I’ve always used Icy Hot and I’m one of the cool people who actually love the smell of the stuff. lol
Icy hot smells good to me too! and I guess kids always suck sometimes
must be just the way it is
Sorry to hear you’ve been having a rough time with Logan! I’m all for vaccines if the doctor reminds me but I don’t take the time to make sure I’m up to date myself.
I am the same as you Suz…..I woudn’t have even known I was overdue for my tetanus
Awesome your going to be korean famous…wonder if you will have instant fame like the gangnam style dude except in the opposite manner..that would be wicked!
I just had my flu vaccine, was at the dr’s and thought, what the hell why not…just never go out of my way to get them!
LOL ….maybe, you never know
and I declined the flu shot
My full and total advice for dealing with children of all ages is (wait for it)
Duct Tape. It’s cheap, use as required. I once used a roll of it and a threatening look during a work meeting to quiet things down.
Although I think it’s not relevant at all, some parents have pointed out that my being child free renders this advice less than helpful. Your milage may vary.
LOL
I’m seriously considering it
I don’t really do much in the way of muscle pain relief. I have done ice baths in the past and I think they work- but I am rarely home soon enough after a race to get it done.
I waited an extra year on certain vaccines (MMR) for my babies, but that’s it. I understand and believe in the need for them.
Whenever any of my kids went through that 2-3 year old pain in the butt phase, I think I just did what you are doing. Refused to listen or react when they were screaming, mean, rude, etc. Positive reaction and reinforcement for good behavior. Obviously hitting and violence can’t be tolerated, but the rest will eventually pass… usually
I guess that’s really all you can do – deal with it
so I am just excited for the rest to be over with. I’m beginning to realize that much of his whining and such is my fault for giving in
but no more!
I’ve got a great idea for Logan and his issues with communication – duct tape. Then you can teach him a little sign language.
Just remember, children help us grow as people. They teach us patience – or the ability to inflict bruises in places that no one else can see.
lol someone else also mentioned duct tape – I really need to try this
Colin laughed at your comment – he loved your wise words
Pumpkin pie blizzard sounds like something I need to try!!! I have to get there soon because all our Dairy Queens are seasonal and I think they’ll close soon. I wish I could say that my girl got better when she hit 3…My friend told me it’s the terrible 2s and the F-ing 3s! She’s just 3 months away from 4 and I am almost seeing the light! Hang in there and be consistent…you’re doing a great job!!
seasonal Dairy Queens?!? I would die! for some reason I only ever want ice cream in the winter
You’re so brave and congrats on almost being done with 3!!!
