That’s not a Cake!!!

Dan (my sister’s bf) turned 30 on Friday and to celebrate we all went to my mom’s for dinner and cake!

who ever said you don’t win friends with salad never met me and Nic ;)

YAY Big Salads! We had pizza but we were still hungry so we took to the bowl of leftover salad :)

I made Dan’s cake – it was a chocolate cake with coffee buttercream – I’ll post the recipe as it was simply divine!

Oh….and it was The Death Star ;)

I’ll be turning 30 this year as well, so I know how special it is and I wanted to make Dan a cake that he would not only appreciate, but one that would make him say OMG!

He loves Star Wars, especially the villains so this cake was perfect. Although – NEVER will I tackle anything that requires so much detail and that’s a sphere again! lol

Logan loves helping taking over to blow out candles…..

As you can see he couldn’t wait to help Dan blow out all 30 candles….including the one we shoved in like a laser ;) I was super impressed with the cake – it not only tasted and looked great, It even sliced nicely..

Anyway, it was a great time with family and I know I say it all the time but I’m thankful every time we get together :)

  1. Wow!!! That’s amazing!! My brothers grooms cake had a Death Star on it & yours looks just like it (& we paid a LOT for that thing!!)

Definitely want to try the coffee buttercream, yum yum!

  2. It’s just after 8am here and my pregnant butt wants CAKE! lol That cake is amazing!!! (Star Wars is awesome, too!)

My birthday is in February and I’ll be 27 next year and I LOVE coffee. I didn’t touch the stuff until a year or two into my job at Tim Hortons when I was a teenager. yum!

  3. That cake is AMAZING!!!!! I want you to make my cake! ;)
    Happy late Birthday Dan!
My sister is like that too, she will eat salad right out of the bowl. (: i’m not a big salad eater.

  4. That cake is awesome! Once I tried to make a cake shaped like Thomas the Tank Engine. The cake stuck to the pan terribly, so I ended up buying one:( Fail! I turned 37 in July and coffee makes me jittery:0

  5. Holy crap woman, that cake is AMAZING!!!!!!!!
I don’t love cooking challenges and tend to shy away from things that look too intimidating. So my biggest cooking challenge is usually the christmas cookies I make for friends and clients. HUNDREDS of cookies (yikes)
My BDay is November 17 and I’ll be 33 (a palindrome!)
    Coffee- YAY!!!!!

  6. Wow, Ali that is a lot of piping! It looks fantastic! I’ve made a teapot cake like that, but used fondant for the details so there wasn’t any piping involved.

I got addicted to coffee about 11 years ago when I had a job that required staying up all hours to learn how to do it. And I love it :D

  7. Awesome cake! I mean the death star…that is sooo cool..

I turned 29 this year, and it was on August 22nd…

….and I am drinking coffee as we speak…

  8. That is an awesome cake – the entire chocolatelyness fits in nicely with the Dark Side theme too ;-)
Similar to your spherical icing issue, I got my cousin a wooden bowl for Christmas once and discovered that bowl shaped objects are a right pain to wrap – next time I’ll ensure I have a box to put it in.

  9. Holy crap, I want to eat that cake. Coffee buttercream? Yes, please! You are amazing- what an incredible cake! I turned 32 this year- Feb 26th. Ugh… I am over halfway to 33. Old.
I am pretty sure I have never made a really complicated dish. I am one of the simple minded folk ;) . The husband and I love these bacon wrapped jalapeno cream cheese things (from the pioneer woman)- but they aren’t complicated… they are just time consuming.

  10. That cake is crazy! I can’t believe that you made that. You need to start putting your resumes into bakeries not bars! My bday was in April. I turned 41. Don’t tell anyone. :P

  11. You have thoroughly impressed me Ali! ha that cake is so cool!!! Logan looks so cute such a big effort to blow out those candles! ha

P.S. I just got my video in the mail today, cannot wait to try it out!!! :) Thanks again!!!!

  12. Awesome cake! I made a martha stewart cake covered with sliced strawberries once. It was so sweet that I could barely eat a slice (which NEVER happens to me!).

I’m turning 35 next year! So excited because of the extra 5 minutes for Boston qualifying. Running gives aging some unexpected perks!

  13. holy freaking heck u are the BEST wife and cake baker ever!! seriously, that needs to be entered on Cake Boss or something…get the food network up all over that! honestly, that is amazing girl!!

will u please come to my bday on jan 8th. :)

  14. You did an amazing job on that cake! I made, with the help of some of my bridesmaids, Mike’s groomsman’s cake for our wedding. That is probably the most complicated thing that I have ever made.

My birthday is March 4th and I turned 27 this year.

I like coffee, I don’t need it to survive haha, but I like the taste!

  15. OMG that cake ROCKS!! you did an awesome job!!

I think one of the most complicated things I ever made was a pumpkin swirl cheesecake.. it tasted awesome, but it just didn’t look as pretty as I hoped.. I haven’t attempted a cheesecake again.

    My birthday is October 20 – it’s-a-comin’! I’m turning 29 this year.

    Coffee = Hell’s Yay!! ;)
