Almost a Half Marathon!

Yep, you read correctly….

Today on my long run I tried to “race” the half marathon distance. <—– which in hindsight was probably pretty dumb. Oh well. Unfortunately my ipod hasn’t been working and so when it did this morning I used my nike plus and it kept stopping throughout my run so I only logged the distance it captured…..I’m thinking I may have run longer ;)

Anyway….so 12.86 miles in 2:02:48!!!!! I’m stoked! I really hope to achieve a similar time for my race in a few weeks.

This run was a mental struggle for me the entire time but I just kept trying to take in my surroundings and being thankful for them and the ability to run :)

I saw this hawk swoop down along the way and then I was instantly reminded of how awesome life is :)

*Thanks for the motivation little buddy. (can you see him on the branch?)

I also kept repeating this mantra over and overI am willing to release all blocks that keep me from completing my run today” – it worked.

MISSION COMPLETED!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

  1. brilliant-you will have no problem on race day. i pretty much go with the-enjoy the moment, you are strong, legs you are strong – etc etc- positive mantras

  2. Define “furthest” and “run”. Do you mean actually run without walking? Or are walk breaks for aid stations allowed? How about longer walks, like up a hill? If we go with farthest traveled on own feet without stopping to actually rest (port potty breaks allowed) then 42.2 K. If you mean actually run and only walking aid stations, then half that. All that assumes that you accept my definition of running, which many runners would consider very slow.

Sounds like a great run for you! Bummer about the technology failures.

    • I would never not count walking….I didn’t stop to walk on this run but if I did in a marathon or at any other time I’d still say I ran :) I think people that take walking too seriously are weird…so you are hardcore!!!!

  3. Nice run! My furthest is 10 miles, give or take. I really wanted an ice bath last week after my race, but didn’t. The next day I was so sore. Maybe there is a method to the madness.

  4. I have run a little over 15 miles. I always take walk breaks (Jeff Galloway method). One thing in my training that I find very helpful is the long slow run. I’m heading out for one today, but obviously I need to waste some time first! I’m super good at time wasting. Luckily it’s cool here in Utah and it will still be 60 degrees when I finally get on the road about 2ish.
I digress, the first time I ran a half marathon I did a 13 miler long slow run which you run about 2 min/miles slower then your 10k or usual pace. The last half marathon that I ran I did was Jeff Galloway suggests and ran farther then the race length but do it slow just to show my body that I mean business. I did and I PR’d that race. The secret is not to get competitive with yourself and start running faster. I keep my pace between 10.30 min/miles and 11.30 min/miles. By the end of the run I feel great and not like I’m going to die! Which is a bonus!
I usually just think something quick and positive to go along with my pace like, “you can do it”, “you got this”, etc.
Great job!! I remember EVERY time I run a little bit farther!

  5. Woohoo! Great job on you mileage and time today! So excited for you! I use lots of mantras during a race. Usually “this is what you trained for” is a big one. During this last race I had Chrissie Wellington on my mind a lot (just read her book A Life Without Limits), and her (book) voice was in my head a lot. She talked a lot about how we impose limits on ourselves, but our body is actually capable of much more than we think it is. So I wanted to free myself of self-imposed limits and go as hard as I could.

  6. Great runnin’!! Clearly you are going to kill that half marathon!
The furthest I have ran is 26.4- a marathon that registered long on my Garmin :) . I have thought about doing a 50k and maybe one day a 50 miler, but I just ran a marathon yesterday and the thought makes me want to cry just a bit.
I really love ice baths- but, man alive, do they suck. The benefits are worth it, I believe :) .

  7. WAY TO GO on the new DPB!!!! It’s always so exciting to run a new pb distance, wahoo!

The longest I ever ran was last month’s marathon :) While I’m so happy to have conquered the marathon and I will DEFINITELY do it again, my favourite distance to run is the half. Far enough that you can do a relatively comfortable pace (unlike a 5k, those are just painful!) yet far enough that you feel like a champ when you’re done, without the last miserable miles of the marathon. Win-win!

I usually take ice baths on anything over 12 miles or if I feel sore or tight post-run. I find that I recover much faster if I take an ice bath and I have WAY less soreness the next day.

  8. Awesome long run! I’ve only done an ice bath once when I was really hurting. It did seem to help. I’m a big fan of compression and massages when I’m hurting. Compression tights aren’t cheap, but they seem to help as much or more than ice baths for me.

  9. Way to go!

The farthest I’ve ever run is 13.1. I can’t wait till 13 miles feels like nothin’! I don’t really have a running mantra, other than whatever comes to mind at the time, (e.g. “You can do this.” “C’mon, Becks,” “Ow! I want to stop!”). :)

  10. Awesome distance PB! Yay! Probably you shouldn’t run that fast for a LSD, the S does mean slow, but good for you knowing your potential. I’d suggest maybe starting out with the 2 hour pacer, who knows what’ll happen! :) My furthest distance is 30K. Ice baths blow but they do help. In the summer we run down at the waterfront trail just so that we can use the lake as an icebath. My mantras are “If it were easy everyone would do it” and “you are stronger than you know”. :) Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. Happy thanksgiving, Ali!! Congrats on an amazing distance. You are SO ready for your half.

The furthest I’ve run is a marathon…and I’ve only done it once.

I have actually never taken an ice bath. I hate cold and have always been terrified. The closest I got to an ice bath was at tough mudder when I had to jump into a dumpster full of ice water…but I got out as fast as I could!

  12. That time is great! You should be so proud! Job well done!
I feel like I want to run a training run at that distance too just to redeem how crappy my last time was! lol

  13. AWESOME time, Ali – well done! My longest was the Hamilton Half two years ago! Despite being a newbie to longer distances, I had virtually no pain and I credit ice baths!!! Although you are already pretty advanced in your training so maybe you don’t need them!?
